“The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten.” 1996 Rolls Royce Silver Spur MK IV Saloon “The Best There Is” described the Rolls Royce Silver Spirit and its long wheelbase variant the Silver Spur in 1981. The Spirit/Spur saloon took eight years to develop, test, refine, and release for production. Rolls Royce set new standards of technical excellence, by taking the best and making it even better. This was exciting even to those who knew the breed best. The Silver Spur with its extended wheelbase offered extra room and comfort for rear seat passengers. The extra room allowed the installation of equipment needed to conduct business for the owner who needed certain conveniences while travelling.
The Silver Spirit & Silver Spur were categorized as: Mark I manufactured from 1980-1989 production totaling: 6,240 units; Mark II manufactured from 1990-1993 with production totaling: 1,658 units; Mark III manufactured from 1994-1995 with production totaling: 465 units; and Mark IV manufactured from 1996-2000 with production totaling 802 units. Mark III & Mark IV are so very rare that their exclusivity will make them highly sought in years to come. The 1996 Rolls Royce Silver Spur MK IV was a refreshed version of the original series. This was the only series that didn’t get its Roman numeral designation. This courtesy was done out of respect to far Eastern countries where this is the symbol of death. The MK IV series was designed in the fall of 1992 with final revisions in late 1995. The 1996 Spirit/Spur refresh included a new Zytec engine management system replacing the old Bosch system. This improved horsepower, reduced petrol consumption, and further refined and optimized the “Silent Motorcar” to new standards of excellence. Exterior enhancements to the MK IV made the Spirit/Spur more modern in appearance. Its new integrated front & rear bumpers attest to this. As of 1997, the long wheelbase was standard and the Silver Spirit model dropped from the line up. 16” Wheels were introduced as part of the suspension refinements. At the time, this was Rolls Royce’s showcase of technology.
This genre Rolls Royce initiated aerodynamic styling to the Rolls Royce brand. Its contemporary architecture was definitely right for the times in every aspect. There will always be a Rolls Royce right for the times because Rolls Royce strive to perfection and product evolution presents a completely new approach to technology of the time. Good to know that some things never change…in a world revolving so very fast some automobiles are outdated before they ever leave the assembly line…….
The Silver Spur MK IV incorporated numerous advancements that made it more enjoyable to drive and more comfortable. The effortless way the car travels….silently, in fact, it is so silky smooth that it makes one check the controls to make sure the engine is still running! It was a combination of these factors along with others that made travelling in these a unique experience. There is also the heritage which shows unmistakably, how each Rolls Royce descended from a long line of motoring masterpieces.
A longer body than the Silver Spirit was incorporated so well that all the visual balance that define Rolls Royce motorcars apart is kept. The added length provides an additional four inches to the already spacious rear compartment. Compared with the overall length of 18’, this dimension may seem small but provides a remarkable difference in extra comfort.
The cellular phone stowed away in the front seat center armrest is again standard. The combination of aesthetic and useful features made the Silver Spur MK IV the most practical answer for the owner who must work while travelling.
Its cabin was exclusively bespoke. Glassy mirror-matched hand-polished veneers augment the ambience with an elegance and warmth that only natural wood can convey. Its responsive not to mention spirited performance, the comfortable interior, the unmistakable sense of refinement all contribute to the Rolls Royce experience…..an experience of elegance and presence. The 1996 Rolls Royce Silver Spur MK IV has an indefinable quality and is still popular today. Driver and passengers alike find real pleasure in driving or being driven in a Rolls Royce Silver Spur.
The differences that identify the Silver Spur from the Silver Spirit are subtle. A special roof covered with luxurious Everflex, unique wheel discs, and badge on the rear deck lid. This extremely rare Silver Spur MK IV has the Everflex roof delete option. Remember, these are all bespoke automobiles, the photos you see are the only examples in existence as no two Rolls Royces will ever be alike…….I can’t say that enough.
The key to the pleasure of driving a Silver Spur MK IV is its undemanding nature. The power assisted steering and cruise control; the silky smooth operation from the automatic transmission; the carefully contoured seats upholstered in soft supple Connolly leather; deep Wilton wool carpets underfoot; the unique dual-zone air conditioning system; all come together to aid the driver cover long distances, thus, arriving at one’s destination as fresh and comfortable as at the journey’s start.
The Silver Spur Mark IV’s fuel injected 6.75 litre alloy engine produces an impressive amount of power when needed but will still move the Silver Spur quietly through the streets of London, New York, or Paris. The Silver Spur MK IV is at home anywhere in the world.
Rolls Royce has never introduced changes for their own sake. It was chosen to refine constantly the design of their brand. Each new development was analyzed carefully to ensure that it not only met the company’s meticulous standards but adds to the overall driving pleasure to be found in a Rolls Royce motorcar……the pride of the UK…the envy of the world…..the purchase of a Rolls Royce precludes the restless quest for something to replace it with. The 1996 Rolls Royce Silver Spur MK IV continued that poised dignity that was the hallmark of every Rolls Royce.
