The Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado had regained its unique body. The all-new design for the 1955 model year was a step forward in contemporary Cadillac design. It was open air driving that offered spacious luxury and comfort. New refinements and an exclusive-to-Eldorado 270 hp V8 engine made the 1955 Cadillac Eldorado sport convertible the most unique motor car in the world.

The spectacular 1955 Cadillac Eldorado gained new rear styling apart from the other Cadillac models. It sweeping rear fenders sported high, slender, pointed tail fins. The dramatic sculpted side ornamentation emphasized its long low lines. Fender skirts were eliminated and the rear wheel cut-outs were radiused. The Eldorado was the pinnacle of Cadillac luxury.

It was beautiful to see, thrilling to drive, and uniquely satisfying to own. From its authoritative front end design with gleaming “Dagmar” bumper guards to the sleek shark-fins, the 1955 Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado was every inch a Cadillac. It was the “Standard of the World” in striking beauty. The 1955 Eldorado is also a certified milestone car.

For the 1955 model year, Cadillac presented an exclusive high performance engine that featured multiple carburetors. It was one of the most responsive cars in the world. The greatly advanced 5.4 litre 16-valve 331 CID OHV V8 engine produced 270 hp @ 4,800 rpm with 468 Nm of peak torque @ 3,200 rpm. It used two Rochester 4GC 4-bbl carburetors.

The engine was mated to the GM Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission. The 1955 Eldorado went from 0-60 mph in 12.3 seconds, 0-100 mph in 40.9 seconds and had a top speed of 113 mph. It did the ¼ mile @ 78 mph in 18.8 seconds. In every way this revolutionary new Cadillac Eldorado is destined to be one of the most valuable collectible cars in the world.

The 1955 Eldorado sport convertible used a fully automatic power folding fabric roof. Its sleek metal parade boot highlighted the luxurious leather clad interior. Nine color combinations were available. Four combinations of black, blue, grey, and red, were trimmed with white, and five solid colors.

On the dashboard of each 1955 Eldorado was a small brass plaque with the engraved name of the owner. Standard features included radio and antenna, heater, power seat and windows, custom trim and ornamentation exclusive to Eldorado. It was truly the “Standard of the World” in high style and glamour.

The 1955 Cadillac Eldorado rode upon a rugged X-type frame, and reinforced side bars with deep X-member junction. The front suspension was the independent Knee-Action type. It used independent helical coil springs; the rear was fitted with 5-leaf semi-elliptic springs.

Power 4-wheel hydraulic drum-type brakes with 211.5 square inch braking area were standard. This classic Cadillac Eldorado had the luxury length of 223.3”, 79.6” wide, and had a wheelbase of 129”. Dual exhaust, hydraulic power steering, saber-spoke aluminum wheels, and whitewall tires were standard. 

The 1955 Cadillacs were introduced in November of 1954, and set a production record of 140,777 Cadillacs of which 3,950 were the Eldorado sport convertible. Before options, the base price was $5,814. And prices are appreciating favorably. In 2012, a 1955 Eldorado sold for $65,000 at Worldwide Auctioneers and another sold for $125,000 at RM Auctions in 2013. This verifies that the 1955 Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado sport convertible is a certified milestone car.
